Fly On!

Welcome to the Official FLY ON! Website.

This song was and is a true piece of America's Space Program History.

Fly On! was written by Kenny Michaels for all the people who spent endless hours getting the Space Shuttle Discovery ready for America's return to space. Kenny was actually working with people from the Kennedy Space Center as Discovery was being readied. As a native Floridian, the space program has always been, as he says "a part of my life". Kenny was raised for the most part in Florida though moving about often, but finally Kenny's parents moved to Melbourne in 1969 (just 45 minutes from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center).

After the Challenger disaster in 1986, Kenny was deeply saddened. He witnessed first hand the catastrophic event, and how important the Space industry is both to his local economy and America. So many of his friends and neighbors were affected, he wondered what he could do to help. At first the song was only meant to help motivate and support Kennedy Space Center workers and management. However, rumors of the song got out. With the help of several friends and KSC, the song was recorded and getting airplay on radio stations from Florida to Minnesota and even Alaska.

The press surrounding the Discovery liftoff was astounding, 3500 press agents from around the globe came to Brevard County to witness the historic event.  Needless to say, with all the press present and the song being played in regular rotation, it quickly became the "Official Song of  America's Return to Space!"

A party was arranged for all the press by Brevard County Tourism Development and they called the event T-Minus 3 (three days before launch). Every major and minor news agency worldwide was present, as a matter of fact CNN taped the concert headlined by Kenny and his band. Ted Koppel's Nightline used footage from the concert on network television (ABC) just two days before the liftoff.

Kenny also performed for the crew of STS-26, senators, congressmen and women, and special dignitaries after Discovery's return from space.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Fly On! and America's Return to Space.

The song was originally released on cassette tape, but is now available re-mastered a Special 20th Anniversary Edition mp3 and can be purchased using PayPal off of this website.

The 20th Anniversary Edition comes with the re-mastered song file (mp3), the facts and story of the songs creation, a biography of the artist, and CD inside and outside jackets.
